The Conundrum of Social Media: Should We Stay or Go?
In the past year, it has become increasingly evident that social media is both disruptive and unhealthy for us as individuals and as a society. In the last fortnight alone, I have come across at least three influencer stories where their polished online personas masked serious personality and psychiatric disorders.
In addition, it has become clear from research that our attachment to social media is undermining our attention spans, curiosity, creativity, empathy, and mental health.
Recent moves to reduce protections and amplify hateful speech on popular social media apps have only heightened my concerns. The very platforms designed to connect us are becoming spaces of division and distress.
Of course, anyone with a business is often told, “You must be on social media,” and many individuals feel they miss out on crucial information if they log off. So, how do we navigate towards greater health and wellbeing if we feel compelled to remain online?
